Sonivox Eighty Eight Grand Piano Virtual Instrument Review
I was looking for some good sampled piano sounds for my DAW and watched allot of videos on this product before I bought it both on Sonivox web site and YouTube. I couldn't pass up buying it at the price they were selling it for at the time. Looks like the price is much higher now.Installation of the product on my Windows 7 system was great, no problems. Once installed, just entered the serial number and you are good to go.
The product comes both standalone and as a VST plugin for your DAW sequencer. I brought up the standalone package first and had problems getting clear sounds(they were all garbled). What I did is increased some of the buffer settings in the options settings in the program from 512 to 1024 and all the piano sounds in the package are nice and clear.
The only problem I have with this music software at this time is loading the sounds. The first time you load a piano sound, it loads OK. When you load a new 2nd or 3rd piano sound, it doesn't load and just you have to restart the software again to load the new sound. This is on a Windows 7 home premium system. I asked Sonivox about this and they are aware of the problem with Windows 7. Not sure if an update is coming or not at this time. Also sometimes it takes a little bit for the sounds to load, maybe 15-20 seconds at the most.
Depending on how much of a piano finatic you are on piano sounds, I feel the sounds of this package are fine for my usage. They sound great across the entire range of the keyboard, but I only have 61 keys. There is allot of good layered sounds such as piano/string pads, piano/choir pads, etc. Also they provide keyboard splits with bass/piano/some lead sounds across portions of the keyboard, the split settings can be modified or overlapped. The program also has several controls for reverb, equalizing, panning, transposing, level adjusting for split sounds, etc. They have a keyboard displayed and as you play your midi keyboard, the displayed keys also show being pressed.
If you are looking for a good piano sampled sound package, this might fit your bill. Go watch some of the video reviews on Sonivox or YouTube if not sure.
